I love horses and have since I was a kid. In recent months, I have learned of the plight of the feral mustang, particularly those who run wild in the southwestern part of the U.S.
I know there are two sides to every story, and in this instance, for sure both sides make strong arguments for their viewpoints.
Because of the kinship I feel with the horse, however, their plight has become a cause near to my heart. I worry not about politics. My concern is for these beautiful animals who have become symbols of our American past, and who represent strength, freedom, and survival.
So I keep tabs on what is happening, and I will often write about them. I also will try to keep you updated on current news related to the saving of America's wild horses.
Mustangs - Agile & Strong
As a breed, mustangs are known for their strength, agility and stamina. The Shoshone made gifts of some mustangs to Lewis and Clark way back in the early 1800's, confident that the strength of the animals would serve them well in their long, treacherous journey through the mountains.
After observing their dexterity and vigor, these men and their companions became so impressed with the mustangs, they credited the mustangs with much of the success of their expedition.
But the feral mustang today is in danger, facing roundups in some States to the point where some fear their extinction. The methods used for this government-sponsored roundup is also controversial, and has become fodder for debate and campaign by such activists as Madeleine Pickens and others. Much more can be learned about her suggestions to help the mustang at her Help Save America's Wild Horses website.
